Executives rarely dispute the essentials of service-oriented architecture (SOA) as they seek the holy grail of business agility. In fact, businesses that have adopted the right SOA Governance Model and started their SOA with the right tooling are experiencing significant business agility breakthroughs: returns on their SOA investment is visible in months rather years.
The technology for SOA is maturing and most applications are clearly headed the SOA way, the challenges of establishing best practices and effectively governing SOA still stand – many enterprises are still struggling to come to terms with the organizational and cultural changes that the SOA approach demands. Top analysts have stated emphatically that without appropriate Governance while developing SOA or other enterprise solutions executives run an 80% risk of failure.
A key accelerated risk of SOA initiative going off track is no clear or supported Governance Model that drives the business goals, principles, processes and effective policies to enforce the benefits of SOA or any other technology. While adding an industry recognized Governance Model alone will ensure the initiative achieves a working SOA, Governance Model's are not a one size fits all in today's global multi-domain enterprise and a slapped in Governance Model may not support growth long term.
Governance has moved beyond the hype. More and more organizations see their initiatives gaining momentum and delivering on their promises if strong Governance was established early in the adoption lifecycle. As of 2010 leading COI's12 agree that greater benefits are within reach when using Governance, however Governance must be established and managed by the business.
